Who wants an ugly and expensive plastic boat when the most beautiful dugout canoes grow in their own forest?
AMAZONICA promotes the revival and preservation of indigenous cultures in Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest.
Here, the Achuar felled a red cedar tree and carved it into a large canoe according to ancient tradition: 7 meters long and 70 cm wide.
Unfortunately, the hardwood trees suitable for this purpose rarely grow on the riverbank. The red cedar stood 3 km inland, so the Achuar had to drag the canoe 3000 meters through the jungle to the river.
The ropes are also a natural product: thick, long lianas – indestructible!
